Demand Better This Election: Housing justice for women, Two-Spirit, trans & gender-diverse people

April 16, 2025

This federal election, we are calling on all parties to commit to ending homelessness and housing precarity for women, Two-Spirit, trans, and gender-diverse people.

As the April 28 election approaches, housing justice must be front and centre. Across Canada, women, Two-Spirit, trans, and gender-diverse people continue to face disproportionate rates of homelessness, housing insecurity, and poverty— yet their experiences remain largely ignored in political platforms and policymaking.

That’s why the National Indigenous Women’s Housing Network and the Women’s National Housing & Homelessness Network have joined the Demand Better campaign.

Together with advocates and organizations across the country, we are calling on all federal parties to make bold, rights-based commitments to end homelessness and ensure safe, affordable housing for all.

Our election demands are grounded in lived expertise, Indigenous sovereignty, and human rights. We’re demanding better—not just for the sake of policy, but for the safety, dignity, and future of our communities.

What You Can Do

Use our demands and questions to engage with candidates in your riding. Share them widely, raise them at debates and town halls, and remind your local candidates that housing is a feminist issue, an Indigenous rights issue, and a human rights issue.

Election Calls for Gender Housing Justice

1. Uphold the right to housing for women, Two-Spirit, trans, and gender-diverse people by committing to adopt the future recommendations of the Neha Review Panel.

2. Increase annual funding to the Urban, Rural, and Northern Indigenous Housing Strategy. Prioritize housing for women, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse people, with clear indicators to measure impact.

3. Boost homelessness program funding to at least $3.5 billion annually, with specific goals, targets, and timelines to eliminate all forms of homelessness. Prioritize initiatives that centre the needs of women, Two-Spirit, trans, and gender-diverse people—and measure outcomes.

4. Raise the Canada Disability Benefit to an amount that lifts people out of poverty with dignity and meets the real costs of living with a disability.

5. Re-establish the federal Women and Gender Equality (WAGE) and Diversity, Inclusion, and Persons with Disabilities cabinet committees to ensure cross-government accountability and action.

What to ask your candidates or party leaders

1. Does your party recognize and commit to the right to housing, as legislated in Canada in 2019?

2. Will your party commit to ending homelessness and housing precarity for women, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse people? How?

3. How does your party plan to honour Indigenous sovereignty and ensure Indigenous women, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse people are lifted out of homelessness?

4. What is your party’s vision for a future where everyone in Canada is thriving, human rights are upheld, and no one is left behind?

This Election, Demand Better

This election is about more than promises—it’s about demanding better.

We are proud to stand with others across the country as part of the Demand Better campaign, amplifying the voices and priorities of those most impacted by housing injustice. Our message to political leaders is clear: women, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse people cannot be left behind.

We demand better—because housing is a human right, and every person deserves a safe, affordable, and dignified place to call home.

Most importantly: go out and cast your ballot. Vote for the future of Canada you want to see.
